Twitter is a microblogging service, a service that lets you post a short burst of text (up to 140 characters in length) like a bird chirping, a tweet (hence the name). It is also regarded as the “SMS of the Internet”. I actually tried updating my Facebook using its Twitter app last year (2009) but for some reason it didn’t work.

I decided to try again recently when I have the idea of updating Twitter on my BB (Blackberry) and having it sync with my FB (Facebook) status. Reason for this is that since having the BB and enjoying the ease of messaging between BB users via the BBM (BB Messenger), I found that I am distancing myself with non-BB users. So I’ve decided to revisit the Twitter to FB sync to bridge this divide.

So for anyone who wishes to do the same, or just for the fun of having a twitter account (it is free!) and have it sync with your FB, you may follow the steps below :

1. How to create a Twitter account.
2. Configuring Facebook to sync with Twitter.
3. Installing Twitter in your Blackberry (For BB users only)
4. Test your Twitter to FB sync.

1. How to create a Twitter account.
a) Go to http://twitter.com/ and click on “Sign Up”.
b) Continue with the registration process and click on “Create my account”.
c) Remember your username and password, you will need this later.

2. Configuring Facebook to sync with Twitter.
a) Login to your FB account.
b) At the search bar, search for “Twitter” and click on “Twitter (Application)”
c) At the “Would you like to connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts?, enter your Twitter username and Twitter password from Step 1 and click Allow.
d) After connecting your Twitter and Facebook accounts, you may choose to transfer/sync your FB profile photo over to your Twitter account. Then check the “App permissions” to allow Twitter to post updates to “Facebook Profile”.

3. Installing Twitter in your Blackberry
** If you do not own a Blackberry, please proceed to step 4 **
a) You need to have Blackberry App World installed. See instructions here.
b) Start the Blackberry App World, and Search for “twitter”. Install Twitter which is developed by Research In Motion Limited.
c) Start Twitter and sign in with your Twitter account.

4. Test your Twitter to FB sync.
a) If you are a BB user, try to post your first tweet via the Twitter app and see if it shows up on your FB status.
b) If you are not a BB user, you can still test by posting your first tweet via the twitter.com website. You can do this from any non-BB smartphones!
c) If it shows up, you’ve just successfully configured the Twitter to FB sync. If it doesn’t, try removing the Twitter app and reinstall it the next day. I know this sounds weird, but it actually worked for me!

Start Tweeting!
Well, it’s all you from this point onwards! By synching your Twitter to FB, you can reach two different social networking sites from a single post. Don’t have a Twitter account? Register now (it is free anyway) and start tweeting! Don’t forget to add me (arkchane)!

It is almost 2 years since I purchased my HTC Diamond . I still think that my Diamond is very functional, but due to the nature of my work, the always on 3G internet connectivity and the “push mail” feature that the BlackBerry offer, had me finally switched both my phone and telco to BlackBerry 9700 (Bold 2) and DiGi respectively. Thanks to DiGi’s for offering the best value for money package and also the “pay as you use” model for both voice and SMS on top of their already lowest RM58/month BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

The very first thing that I notice after using the phone is the sheer speed that the BlackBerry 9700 has to offer. It gave me the feeling of almost hardware speed, wait time is almost non-existent when compared to the Windows Mobile platform of the HTC Diamond, but perhaps that is the advancement in hardware after 2 years. Of course the animation is quite dull when compared to the much hyped iPhone, but I will trade speed over superfluous design any day.

Let us move on to the 10 things that you should learn about the BlackBerry :

1. Apps

As with any device nowadays, smartphone without apps (applications) is like a car with no fuel. It is only through apps that the BlackBerry can unleash its true potential. Below is the list of my apps and the instructions on how to install them.

Google Mobile App
(From your browser go to http://m.google.com -> Download Google Mobile App)
This is the app version of the web search engine, I prefer to do my searches using the app as I find it quicker. Maybe it is just me.

BBNotePad (click here to download)
Notepad has always been my favourite application, light weight and simple. It is fortunate for me to be able to find a free version of it for my BlackBerry.
*Note* – Refer below for the instructions to install using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager

BlackBerry App World
Your browser should load up http://mobile.blackberry.com by default . From here click on “BlackBerry App World – Download today!” and follow the instructions.

Facebook
After installing the BlackBerry App World, I installed Facebook for BlackBerry using its search feature.

Windows Live Messenger (Installed By Default)
I use Windows Live Messenger a lot, it is convenient to have it installed by default. To launch it go to, Menu -> Instant Messaging -> Windows Live Messenger

NEW! iSkoot For Skype (click here to download)
After almost 1 month of using the BlackBerry I found that the only instant messenger that I’m missing is Skype. Thanks to Ken, a friend of mine for letting me know that there’s actually a Skype client for the BlackBerry. This version is compatible with BlackBerry 9700 running OS 5.
*Note* – Refer below for the instructions to install using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager

To Install Using The BlackBerry Desktop Manager (BB DM) :
- Download the file and extract it to a folder.
- From the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, go to Application Loader -> Add/Remove Applications -> Start.
- Click on Browse and browse to the folder where the file was extracted to and seach for the *.alx file and click Open.
- From the BB Desktop Manager, click Next and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

2. YouTube

Digi Need To Enable APN (digistrm) For YouTube Streaming
(http://www.digi.com.my/blackberry/faq.do)

This section is particular to DiGi’s BIS subscriber, for some reason (most probably for bandwidth control), DiGi need us to configure the APN to digistrm before us being to view YouTube video streaming. To do this, follow the steps below :

Menu -> Options -> Advanced Options -> TCP/IP

(TICKED) APN Settings Enabled
APN: digistrm
(TICKED) APN Authentication Enabled
Username for APN:
Password for APN

*Both Username and Password for APN Authentication are left blank*

Error Playing. An error has occurred attempting to play media.

For the first 2 weeks since getting the phone, I have not been able to watch any YouTube videos. It keeps prompting “Error Playing. An error has occurred attempting to play media”. The search for any information in google and my personal attempt to troubleshoot the problem led me to no solution. At the end of the 2 weeks I had nobody to turn to, so I gave DiGi’s support an attempt. I’m determined to solve this issue no matter what, even if it means terminating Digi. But to my surprise Digi support did manage to solve it. Kudos to DiGi!

To save the heartache of many future BlackBerry users I would like to share the solution with you. Please configure your BlackBerry browser with the below settings :

Browser settings

Menu -> Browser -> Menu -> Options :

[1] Browser Configuration

Browser: Internet Browser

(TICKED) Support JavaScript
(TICKED) Allow JavaScript popups
(TICKED) Terminate slow running scripts
(TICKED) Show Images
(TICKED) Use Background Images
(TICKED) Support Embedded Media

Browser Identification: BlackBerry

Start Page: Home Page

Default Search Provider: Google

Home Page Address: http://mobile.blackberry.com/

[2] General Properties

Default Browser: Internet Browser

(Type of Fonts here doesn’t really affect the settings)

(NOT TICKED) Full Screen View
(TICKED) Enable JavaScript Location support

Prompt Before:
(NOT TICKED) Closing Browser on Escape
(Ticked) Closing Modified Pages
(NOT TICKED) Switching to WAP for streaming media
(NOT TICKED) Running WML Scripts

**NOTE**
If the YouTube streaming still does not work after the reconfiguration above, please try restarting it (ATL + RIGHT SHIFT + DEL).

3. Configure Email
Configuring email on your BlackBerry is a breeze through Menu -> Setup -> Email Settings , however, if you are anything like me, you will not want to use the signature feature from the BlackBerry (BB) BIS. The BB BIS attaches your signature at the end of mail, not at the end of the message which is something like the below.

—————————————————————————

I personally prefer it to be at the end of my message. To do this you must first clear up the Signature field on your BB BIS email settings. Then configure your signature using the AutoText feature, go to Menu -> Options -> AutoText. Then, Menu -> New.

Replace:
mysig (or any other short text)

With:

Best Regards,
abc.com
Sent via BlackBerry®

Using: SmartCase
Language: All Locales

So the next time after you finished writing your email, go to the next line and type “mysig” follow with a space and your signature will appear automatically.

Another feature that I would recommend is the Auto BCC feature (Delivery Options -> Auto BCC) which act as an email sent confirmation and also for your own reference.

4. Sync With Outlook
Honestly, the migration from my Diamond to the BlackBerry was seamless. My Calendar & Contacts sync beautifully within minutes after installing the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

5. Backup
The BB Desktop Manager also features a very complete backup tool (Backup & Restore -> Backup). I can easily restore all my data and settings even after a full reset on the device. I would recommend you to perform a periodic backup, at least once a day since the backup process will complete within minutes.

6. BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)
The BBM is one of the most stable, easy to use and full featured Instant Messenger that I’ve ever used. I’m quite certain that you will come to the same conclusion yourself. Having both Live Messenger and BBM online all the time will also cut down your usage on voice and SMS.

7. Encrypting Media Card
Since most of your personal data is stored in your BlackBerry, I would highly recommend you to at least enable the encryption on the media card using “Security Password” mode of encryption. Please view the link below for more details :

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB16088&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_SUPPORTISSUE_1_1&dialogID=331830763&stateId=0%200%20331834153

8. Personalization
I’m not a fan of changing background wallpaper and using the hottest rock song as ring tones. However, the many tones that are available in the BB to differentiate different types of applications (call, different types of email accounts, different types of instant messaging, etc) makes it very intuitive.

I had a hard time trying to sleep at first when I’m awaken by the email alerts in the wee hours of the morning only to find out that I just received a spam email!! I’m very appreciative of the effort by RIM (Research In Motion) to include the “Phone Calls Only” profile.

9. Configure Convenience Key
The convenience keys at both sides of the phone can be used to quickly open often used programs, by default Camera (right) and Voice Dialing (left). To configure it to use other apps, go to Menu -> Options -> Screen/Keyboard -> Left/Right Side Convenience Key.

10. Tips

a) Turning on mass storage mode while connected to the computer without mass storage mode.
While connected to the BB Desktop Manager in sync mode. In your BB, go to Mode -> Options -> Memory, go to the bottom of screen, Menu -> Enable USB Mass Storage.

b) Turning off flash while using camera
While the Camera app is on, press on “space” to toggle Flash, Off/On/Auto.

c) Short cut keys
- double space for a “.” and an upper case for the next letter
- while using the browser, keying in “space” will result in “.”

Special thanks :

I’ve recently upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. Even though it is a major enhancement compared to Vista, I found out that the driver that I used for Vista can no longer detect my USB-to-Serial converter on Windows 7. I manage to find the solution while browsing the net and I would like to share my findings.

I got my USB-to-Serial converter to work after installing Prolific USB-to-Serial Driver. Click here to download it.

I came to know that HyperTerminal is no longer a part of Windows since Vista and I found Putty to be a very powerful alternative, besides terminal emulation, it is also a Telnet and SSH client. You can download it from their link here http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ .

To connect to your USB-to-Serial converter using Putty, first you must identify which port is allocated to your converter. To do this in Windows 7, Go to Start -> Right Click Computer -> Manage . Then Computer Management (Local) -> Device Manager -> Ports (COM & LPT) -> Prolifec USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3) . You should see your device listing similar to the image on the left.

Take note of the Com Port that your connector is using. You will need this information to configure your Putty. To connect using Putty to your device using the serial interface, firstly startup the Putty program. Enter the correct port at the “Serial line” input box. Then at the Connection type: choose Serial. Click on Open and your session should start immediately.

Press on the Enter key and you should get some response from your device.

This is the 3rd and final episodes in Contributing To Malsingmaps Series. As I’ve hinted in Part 2, this article will explain on how you can use MapSource to replace your conventional and mostly “outdated” maps. Below are the advantages of using MapSource compared to conventional maps :-

1. FREE!! Well, what can I say, this is the No. 1 benefit in the digital age today. Nothing beats it! Period!

2. Frequently updated. Malsingmaps gets updated monthly. Unless you buy a new map every month which is ridiculous, it’s impossible to keep up with this digital version.

3. Route advisory. If you select two locations (waypoints in MapSource’s term), MapSource will create a route between those 2 points. You can use this function to plan your journey’s ahead, very useful for sales people. Most of the time it’s accurate, even if it’s not, heck, it’ll get you there!

The first thing you need is MapSource running on your PC, visit Contributing To Malsingmaps : Part 1 for all the information you need to get MapSource running. Also remember to install the latest version of MalsingMaps (v2.30 is the latest at the time of writing). Please check out Malsingmaps Forum for the latest release.

Google Earth is also highly recommended as you can compare your results on your MapSource with Google Earth. Really cool!

Let us start with the search tool. In MapSource, go to Find -> Find Places -> Feature tab, and enter the name i the “Name” field. I’ll use Petronas Twin Towers as an example. Click on Find and OK. To view it in Google Earth. Go to View -> View in Google Earth.

To create a route, we will need to save it as a waypoint. To do this, click on the Waypoint Tool on the task bar or Tools -> Waypoint (shortcut key – w). Left click on Petronas Twin Towers and the Waypoint Properties will show up. Click on OK to save it.

Next, try to locate KL Tower. Use the same steps above and save KL Tower as our second waypoint.

To create a route, click on KLTower under the Waypoints tab. Right click on any waypoints and select Create Route using Selected Waypoint(s). Click on Insert Waypoint and select PetronasTwinTowers. Click OK. Click on OK again.

You now have the route highlighted in yellow on your map. Use the Zoom Tool (Tools -> Zoom, shortcut key – z) to navigate around your map according to your preference. Remember that you can always view it in Google Earth!

Please bear in mind that this article assume that you do not have a GPS device. If you have one, the advantages are beyond the scope of this article. Hopefully you are well convinced up to this point. I’ve never turned back to using conventional maps since switching to using GPS map. I’m very confident that you’ll experience the same thing.

There you have it, GPS Map For Civilians. Happy routing!

This article is actually the 2nd part in Contributing to Malsingmaps Series. Please visit Contributing To Malsingmaps : Part 1 for the first article. In Part 2, I will be explaining the below :-

1. How to connect your HTC Touch Diamond to Mapsource.
2. Contributing POI.
3. Configuring your HTC TD to record tracks.
4. Contributing high quality tracks.
5. Upgrading Maps In Mapsource

1. How to connect your HTC Touch Diamond to Mapsource.

You will need a PC with a working Mapsource. If you don’t, please refer to Part 1 of the series. Once you manage to install Mapsource, you can now sync both your GPS device or HTC Diamond in my case, and Mapsource. To do this, launch the Mapsource application on your PC and connect your HTC Diamond using the USB port and choose ActiveSync as the connection type.

Upload all Waypoints, Routes and Tracks to Mapsource by using the Transfer -> Receive From Device function on the Mapsource. You should upload everything into your Mapsource, so choose Waypoints, Routes and Tracks and click Receive. Leave the Maps as most probably Mapsource will have a newer map compared to your phone or device.

2. Contributing Point Of Interest (POI).

POIs are the easiest contribution to make as it consist of only the coordinate. In Garmin MXT, I save them as “My Locations” and you upload to Mapsource as Waypoints. This is the recommended coordinate format that you need to follow while contributing : N3 01.163 E101 27.042 . For a proper contribution, please indicate name, the MapSource image and the gdb file (MapSource save in gdb format).

The link below would be a sample POI contribution on Malsingmaps :-

http://www.malsingmaps.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=124685#p124685

Please refer to my complete list of contributions at the end of the post.

3. Configuring your HTC TD to record tracks using Garmin MXT.

Tracking is a good way to record your tracks on your GPS map. In Garmin MXT, you turn on your tracking options via Tools -> Manage My Data -> Tracks. Go to Options, turn on Recording Mode, set the Recording Interval to Most Often and enable or disable Show Active Track on Map according to your preference.

4. Contributing high quality tracks.

If you’ve followed the first part of the series, you will know that HTC Diamond users will never be able to provide Gold Standard Tracks because our internal antenna is inferior compared to an external antenna. However, we can still provide valuable contributions through tracks on unexplored map and Point Of Interests (POIs).

To begin, let us upload our tracks from our device into Mapsource as described in step 3.

As you can see, my track has sharp edges even when I’m circling a roundabout at 20kmh. This kind of quality really cannot compare with the track from an external GPSr (GPS receiver) user tracking on his/her bicycle! Of course with a bit of creativity we can improve it through post processing (PP). I’m not refering to Photoshop but MapSource itself has sufficient tool to enhance your raw track.

You can create a more accurate track by tracing on top of the raw track by using the track draw tool at Tools -> Track Draw (shortcut key, t) in MapSource.

The next step is one of the coolest function in MapSource. You can compare your results in Google Earth! In MapSource, go to View -> View in Google Earth.

That’s it! That’s all you need to submit a proper contribution.

Remember to include the name, coordinate if available, the MapSource and the Google Earth image for comparison and lastly the gdb file.

5. Upgrading Maps In Mapsource.

It’s now v2.30 since v2.28 in Part 1 of the series. So I think its appropriate to include some simple instructions on how to upgrade your MapSourse map to a newer version.

Firstly, uninstall the old map. Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> GM-Mysin v2.29 -> Remove .

Next, install the new map via the MSM-MySin v2.30 Installer. You’re done!<!--[if gte mso 10]>

Global Positioning System or better known as GPS uses a constellation of between 24 and 32 satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, that enable GPS receivers to determine their current location, time, and velocity (including direction).

It was initially thought that 3 satellites are enough for normal GPS operation but since GPS requires a very accurate clocking mechanism, at least 4 satellites are needed.

As of March 2008, there are 31 actively broadcasting satellites in the GPS constellation. Their orbits are arranged so that at least 6 satellites are always within line of sight from almost everywhere on Earth’s surface.

Atmospheric conditions can provide a significant challenge to providing GPS position accuracy. This will explain why we are getting a quicker GPS fix during a clear sky compared to during a cloudy or a stormy weather as the ionosphere could delay the speed of microwave signals from the satellites.

- excerpt from Wikipedia -

Garmin MXT and Malsingmaps 2.28 (MSM v2.30 is out! Please refer to the end of the post for upgrade instructions!)

I was very curious on how usable is the GPS feature in the HTC Touch Diamond. Within the first few days of getting the phone, I managed to install Garmin MXT and Malsingmaps 2.28 . And I’m amazed the first time I got my GPS to work! Wow, I’m here, looking at my current GPS position in my phone. In my 2 months of using the phone, the GPS feature is singled out as the best feature. With the phone, I’m able to reach places that I’ve never been to the first time round without asking for any directions! Very usable indeed!

Yes, of course. I can still depend on unlicensed softwares, I don’t even need any effort to get it from the internet but I’m a person that do not believe in taking without giving. That was the same reason that got me to write How To Hard-SPL A HTC Diamond , to contribute to the community the best I can. So here I am, writing yet another article hoping to motivate fellow HTC Diamond users and anyone who uses their GPS map to contribute towards Malsingmaps community.

Installing MapSource

As a newbie in the malsingmaps community, I will go through the learning process with you. Honestly, getting start on how to contribute was quite daunting. You will end up with plenty of links describing the same thing but using a different method. You really need to put in some effort to understand them. I believe that such complexity would drive away many potential contributors. Hence, I will try to post a “One Stop Solution” with all the instructions and files in a single site.

I will need to warn fellow HTC Diamond users that we will never be able to provide Gold Standard Tracks because our internal antenna is inferior compared to an external antenna. Do not be discouraged by this fact as we can still provide valuable contributions through tracks on unexplored map and Point Of Interests (POIs).

With that said, let us move on to install the first software you will need to manage your map, the MapSource. Installing Mapsource consists of 3 parts :-

A. Installing Training Center (download)
B. Installing Mapsource Update (download)
C. Malsingmaps Installer (v2.30) (download)

Download my full installation instructions here.

Upgrading To Malsingmaps v2.30

1. To uninstall old map, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> GM-Mysin v2.29 -> Remove.

2. To install new map, download the new Malsingmaps Installer. Install the MSM v2.30 installer file.

Part 2 >>

For those who are curious, Contributing to Malsingmaps Part 2 will discuss on the below issues :-

1. How to connect your HTC Touch Diamond to Mapsource.
2. Configuring your HTC TD to record tracks.
3. Contributing POI.
4. Contributing high quality tracks.

Introduction

The goal of this blog is to provide an all-in-one site that has the complete step by step instructions and all the files needed to flash a HTC Diamond with Hard-SPL and a ROM. Intended for newbies and those who needs additional motivation to do it, hence the use of signed Hard-SPL and ROM. In my case I will be doing an upgrade from my stock 1.37 ROM to a TLR v3 ROM (with integrated 1.93 ROM).

The Ingredients :-
Microsoft Windows Vista as the ActiveSync PC
Hard-SPL-Diamond-OliNex (Version 1.30, Signed)
TLR-Diamond-3.08.07.16 (TLR v3, Signed)

The following guide will be broken up into 3 parts :-

Calm Before The Storm
This chapter will refer to the components needed and also the backup of settings and programs that you wish to recover after the Hard-SPL and ROM upgrade. You can’t break anything here.

The Great Battle
This chapter is where the most important and risky instructions are given. Basically this is the “point of no return”.

Battle Scars
If you survived the battle, it will leave you with a prized scar. It will change your phone and you forever!

*Note* – The steps given are referring to my own upgrade, so the program and backup list might differ from yours.

Calm Before The Storm

1. Get ready all required files beforehand. Hard-SPL, ROMs, Programs, Backups, etc.. Most files come in compressed forms, test them first.

2. Keep in mind that a power failure will definitely brick your phone, do not continue if you know that you are having power instability or problems at your area or house. Having internet connection during the upgrade is very useful in case you’ve forgotten some steps during the course of the upgrade.

3. Turn off your phone by using the “Airplane Mode” function and logoff IM to eliminate distractions.

4. Write down your program list for reinstallation after the upgrade.

- Garmin Mobile XT 4.20.30w
- Pocket TV
- CorePlayer

5. Prevent your phone from going into standby mode, make sure to uncheck the Power Setting “When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC.” and on “Advanced” tab, Check “Turn off device if not used for” set it to 30 min. In short, change them to the default settings.

6. Backing Up Settings and Programs

Backup Owner Information

Name : Your Name
Company : Your Company
Address :
Telephone : Your Contact
E-mail : Your Email

Device ID

Device name : HTC_Diamond ( Important if you need to sync back with your PC ! )
Description :

7. Collect ROM Info Before Hard-SPL ( For Warranty Purposes Too ! )

Soft Reset -

H (Bottom Left)

(Bottom Right)
R 1.0.25.03
G 52.26a.25.09
D 1.37.00.00

Enter Bootloader (Pressing Volume Down + Soft Reset)

(Red Zone)
DIAM100 64M
SPL-1.37.0000
MicroP-Diam (LED) v11

(Green Zone)
PSOC-Diam STAGE_PVT v0x30

The Great Battle

*Warning* – Instructions after this point might brick your phone, turning your phone into a brick or a door stopper! All steps need to be completed in its entirety. Do not skip any steps! Continue at your own risk!

1. It’s important to check that your PC do not sleep or hibernate during the upgrade.

2. Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe

3. Follow the instructions in the ROM Update Utility (RUU) carefully.

Toward the end it will confirm the version upgrade. Mine was showing the below :-

Detected Image Version : 1.37.707.1

From : Image Version : 1.37.707.1

To : Image Version : 1.30.OliNex

*NOTE* Doing this on Windows Vista for the first time will show the below error message, however, Vista will eventually manage to find the correct driver for this. I was almost scared half to death watching my phone fading to a black screen and the below error popped up at the same time! Now you know..
“ERROR [260] : CONNECTION”, basically my PC has lost connection with my phone.

Success during second attempt. The update process took less than 2 minutes.

Your Diamond will reset and it will configure your phone for first time of use. I’m not sure if you can actually skip this but I waited until everything was completed.

Your diamond will reset a second time, this time launching the TF3D. And I can’t find a way to skip the HTC video. Take note that I cancelled my phone function during all the prompt since the Hard-SPL.

Confirm your Hard-SPL version by going into the Bootloader, pressing
the Volume down and the soft reset button. Hold the Volume down button until you see the TriColor Screen. Mine is showing the below :-

(Red Zone)
DIAM100 MFG 64M
SPL-1.30.OliNex
MicroP-Diam (LED) v11

(Green Zone)
PSOC-Diam STAGE_PVT v0x30

Reset your phone, confirm the ActiveSync connection and move on to the next step.

4. Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe

5. Follow the instructions in the RUU carefully.

Toward the end it will confirm the version upgrade. Mine was showing the below :-

From : Image Version : 1.37.707.1

To : Image Version : 3.08.07.16

6. SUCCESS!! The update process took around 20 minutes.

7. As expected, your Diamond will run through the first time use procedures, identical to what happens after a Hard-SPL. However, it skipped the HTC video this time round. Cool!

Battle Scars

1. Soft reset after the upgrade gave me the below results :-

H (Bottom Left)

(Bottom Right)
R 1.00.25.05
G 52.29.25.12U
D 1.93.00.00

2. Restore Settings

Owner Information and Device ID

3. Restoring Garmin

Reinstalling Garmin is very easy since all of your files and settings are in your Internal Storage. To backup all of your personal settings (Home, My Locations, etc.. ), copy all .NVM files in your Main Garmin folder (not your internal storage).

4. Improvements/Differences After Upgrade

The phone feels much more responsive now and has a very stock look. I’ve also managed to solve a minor issue after upgrade. Details below :-

A) The Start Menu (Start -> Settings -> Menus) list could no be changed, giving the error “Cannot move that item” when I tried to edit it.

B) When I tried to add programs in TF3D, I see lots of duplicate entries like Calendars, Contacts, Excel Mobile, Help, etc etc..

The solution is to play with these 2 folders (This will solve both A and B) :-

/windows/startmenu [AND] /windows/startmenu/programs

Closing

Well, that’s basically it. Hopefully this will overcome your fear of bricking your phone or able to give you just enough motivation for you to enjoy the latest ROMs by doing it yourself. Believe me, it is a joy to be able to do all of the above on your own without depending on someone else who might not have a better idea than you do..

Today I installed my first web proxy server using Squid on my Ubuntu 7.10 server. The goal is to allow myself to use this server as a web proxy remotely. To prevent anyone from abusing this server, I configured it to use simple authentication (username/password).

Below are the complete steps (if I remember them correctly.. hehe ) :-

Installing Squid
1. sudo -s (I always prefer to maintain as a root user while installing/removing applications)
2. apt-get install squid (You will see some error after the installation, ignore it as it will be fixed in the next section)

Configuring Squid
1. It is always a good practice to backup all the configuration files before you alter them. So let us make a copy of the squid.conf

# cd /etc/squid/
# cp squid.conf squid.conf.original

2. We will need to create a password file to store the user’s authentication

# touch /etc/squid/squid_passwd
# chmod o+r /etc/squid/squid_passwd

3. The program htpasswd will be used to add users to the password file

# htpasswd /etc/squid/squid_passwd user
New password :
Re-type new password :
Adding password for user user

4. Below would be how the complete squid.conf will look like (refer to the original squid.conf for explanation and further tuning) :-

http_port 3128
icp_port 3130
htcp_port 4827
visible_hostname hostname #Replace “server_hostname” with the hostname of your Ubuntu machine

cache_mem 16 MB
refresh_pattern . 0 20% 8640
hierarchy_stoplist cgi-bin ?
acl QUERY urlpath_regex cgi-bin \?
no_cache deny QUERY

acl www_ports src 80 443
acl ftp_ports src 21
acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/32
acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
acl manager proto cache_object
acl CONNECT method CONNECT
acl PURGE method PURGE

http_access allow manager localhost
http_access deny manager
http_access allow PURGE localhost
http_access deny PURGE

auth_param basic program /usr/lib/squid/ncsa_auth /etc/squid/squid_passwd

acl wwwusers src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
acl ncsa_users proxy_auth REQUIRED
http_access allow ncsa_users

ftp_user Squid@domain1.com
ftp_passive off
acl ftpusers src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
http_access allow ftpusers ftp_ports

5. Create cache files using squid using the command “squid -z” , ignore the errors.

6. To run squid in debugging mode use the command “squid -NCd10″ . You will get some kind of explanation of what is running in the background.

7. We’re done! Lets restart squid to make it run using our new configurations.

# /etc/init.d/squid restart
